Science has come a long way in the previous several centuries. With his three laws, Isaac Newton settled the old debate over the nature of forces and motion in the 17th century. Ben Franklin discovered a lot about electricity in the 18th century. Darwin elucidated the variety of species in the nineteenth century, Maxwell demonstrated the mechanics of light, and Mendeleyev delineated chemical element families. In the twentieth century, we had Einstein, who discovered many things, including gravity.
Not to mention Watson and Crick, who discovered the molecular basis of genetics and life. What more do you require? So it's a good idea to make a list of them, just in case someone forgets to work on them.
