Each year, the National Consumers League analyses the thousands of consumer complaints filed at Fraud.org and makes them public in order to track scam trends and use as an educational tool for fraud prevention. 

Fewer customers are reporting fraud losses, but the median loss has reached a 10-year high.

Consumers have had a particularly difficult year, yet fraudsters have continued to use the epidemic to make their crimes more profitable. More than one-quarter (41.49 percent) of consumers who submitted complaints with Fraud.org claimed a loss.

Despite a minor decrease from the 43.19 percent who reported losses in 2020, the median fraud loss was $800, the most since 2012. The proportion of complaints that included a stated loss peaked in 2019, with nearly half of all complainants (47.48 percent) alleging a loss that year.

This growth might be related to scammers' increasingly successful strategies, customers being less resistant to fraudulent schemes, or some other factor.
